ACE Open hosts five fully-supported South Australian artist studios through its Annual Studio Program. Places are awarded through a competitive application process and support outstanding applicants who display strong artistic merit and commitment to their practice, and who will benefit by engaging in an active program of professional development and/or career opportunities during the program period.

The Annual Studio Program provides a fully-supported studio space with 24/7 access for twelve months; professional development opportunities including studio visits with Australian and international curators, introductions to visiting artists, participation in public programs, mentorship by ACE Open artistic staff and profiling and promotion opportunities.

This residency offers:
One rent-free studio at ACE Open, provided from January 2022 for twelve months. The studio space features 24/7 access, plus shared kitchen and breakout facilities. Utilities (electricity, internet, water) are included.
Professional development opportunities including, but not limited to: studio visits with Australian and international curators, introductions to visiting artists, participation in public programs, and mentorship by ACE Open curatorial staff as well as profiling and promotion opportunities through ACE Open.
Studio Program artists will present work in Studios: 2022, a group exhibition at ACE Open.
Thanks to a new partnership with Firstdraft in Sydney, one studio artist will be selected to present a solo exhibition at Firstdraft in 2022. The artist will receive a $5k artist fee.

Professional artists from South Australia working in any medium are invited to apply.
The successful applicant will be selected on the basis of strength artistic merit, commitment to the development of their art practice, as well as a clear demonstration of the program’s benefit to the their professional development.
Applications are considered by an advisory committee composed of ACE Open staff, a current ACE Open studio artist, and 2 x external curators or museum professionals.
Artists who will be studying full-time in 2022 are ineligible to apply.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, and culturally and linguistically diverse applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

It is expected that artists spend a minimum 20 hours per week in their studio.

ACE Open will endeavour to promote and market studio artists where applicable. This may mean media outlets requesting information (e.g. photos, biographies, interviews) as well as ACE Open’s own marketing strategies (e.g. photography or video of artists at work in their studio).

ACE Open often hosts open nights and VIP events in the gallery and studio spaces. As resident artists it is expected that you will support these events by attending.

The studio is one of five located at ACE Open. The artist will share the studio complex’s communal space with other resident artists.

How many studios are available?
There are five studios available for 2022. One studio is awarded by Helpmann Academy, and another awarded by the Adelaide Central School of Art. The other three studios are available by application.

How much does the studio cost?
The studios are offered rent-free to the successful applicants.

Where are the studios?
The studios are located upstairs of the ACE Open Gallery, Lion Arts Centre, North Terrace (West End) Adelaide.

I live interstate or overseas. Can I apply for a studio?
The studios are only offered to artists living in South Australia.

Can I live in my studio?
No, the studios are not residential, and ACE Open does not allow artists to live in their studios.

When will I be able to access my studio?
You will have 24/7 access to your studios

What is inside the studios?
The overall studio complex features bathrooms, sinks, basic kitchen facilities and communal sitting areas. The individual studios vary but largely they are unfurnished.

Is there a workshop available?

Who else has access to the studios?
ACE Open staff (our offices are in the same building), other studio artists, as well as the occasional guest of ACE Open who will be staying in the apartment, in the same building/on the same floor as the studios.

How will my studio residency be promoted?
ACE Open will promote successful applicants on our social channels, in a media release and on our website. Throughout the year, the artists will be profiled and promoted by ACE Open. If you are doing anything exciting or have an exhibition coming up, you are encouraged to share it with the ACE Open team who will endeavour to promote this to our networks.

What else is near ACE Open?
Located in the West End between North Terrace and Hindley Street, ACE Open is conveniently near many of UniSA’s facilities, local cafes, bars and eateries as well as printers and art stores Campus Colour and Art Stretchers on Hindley Street. We are within 50m of the tram stop, opposite Mod Gallery and an easy 15-minute walk into the city centre.

Can previous recipients of the studio residency program apply again?
Since becoming an established annual program in 2019, the Program focuses on 12 months of tailored professional development for participating artists. This means recipients of the 2019 Program onwards are not eligible to participate again.

Can I apply if I am a student?
If you are still completing your art degree unfortunately you cannot apply (yet!).
